I'm trying to figure out if they made diferent bell housings for the ZF-S6-650. The only ones I've ever seen were made to fit the newer modular bell housing, but I know they put this tranny behind the 7.3L diesel. I'm pretty sure the 7.3L has the same bell housing pattern as the push rod gas truck engines (460, 351, 302, 300). Did ford use an adaptor plate for the few years this combo was available. I am considering a 6-speed for my truck buildup but didn't know if it would bolt to my 460. Nobody seems to know this so I figured I'd ask those of you who have them. Thanks.
The ZF-6 was introduced in 1999. Prior to that, there was the ZF-5 which had different bellhousings for the 460, 7.3, and 300-302-351. As far as I know, the transmission was the same. The ZF-6-650 used now, has an integrated bellhousing.
The ZF-S6-650 and ZF_S5-47 both have an integrated bell housings. I didn't know if the 7.3 & 6.0 diesel bell housings were the same and if they were different than the gas engines. I thought the 7.3 had the same BH pattern as the gas engines. There may be different trans main housings for different engines. I would like to know if a 7.3 ZF-S6 will bolt to a 460. Thanks
A 7.3 diesel transmission will not bolt up to any Ford gas motor.
A 6.9 IDI, 7.3 IDI, and 7.3 Power Stroke transmission will bolt up to any other of the engines. I do not know if the 6.0 tranny will work with the other diesel motors.
There were gas versions of the ZF 5 which was a one piece case and bell housing.
