I recently bought this truck and have not been driving it except moving it around the driveway. One day I went to start it and nothing so I left it alone for a day or so and returned to find that the truck would start this time. I just replaced my old factory starter with a new gear reduction starter. The starter has two connections just like factory one, the only difference is that there are only two bolt holes instead of the three. So I get in all squared away and go to start the truck, first nothing then I tried it again and it fired right up except it continued to crank. I immediately shut the engine off but it continued to crank and began to smoke. I disconnected the terminals to finally get it to stop. has anyone seen this before? if so where should i look other than a starting solenoid and GEM?

also the passenger side positive battery terminal was melted in two when i bought it, may be unrelated.
Assuming you have the typical Ford starter relay on a fender skirt in the engine bay, I would suspect it. Then the steering column switch would be my second suspect part.
Tracing an intermittent problem is a pain, but those are the two main items which I think could be flaky in both engaging and releasing the starter.
