2001 F-250 cc/4x4 PSD - 127,000 miles

Alright, so I get up this morning (about 40 deg. out) and crank the truck to go duck hunting. It runs/starts fine going both to and from the duck hole. After I get back home I turned the truck off for about 5-10 mins. and go back out to crank it and it won't start. When I turn the key it makes a horrible buzzzzzzz sound. Now it has done this once or twice since I've had the truck(about 5 months) but it always started the next time I tried to crank it. But this time it wouldn't start no matter how many times I tried it. My buddy thought it was the batteries going dead, so we hooked up the jumper cables to his powerstroke and let it charge for a couple of minutes. Meanwhile, I thought it might be the starter so I went under the truck and tapped the starter a few times (it was a NAPA refurbished starter). When I went to crank it, it crunk just fine.

So I went to NAPA and had the batteries checked - they read good. I havn't had any other problems with the truck today. Does this sound like a starter issue or something else? Also, should I go ahead and buy a new starter or see how this plays out. And if I do buy a new starter should I get a brand new one or another refurbished one from NAPA.

Sorry to be so long winded, but I would appreciate any help inthe matter. Thanks.

I'd pull the starter and check the solenoid terminals to see if they're loose or corroded and clean and tighten them. Probably the best place to start if it cranked just fine after a couple of whacks. Lot's cheaper than a new starter too.

I would check my relay and definately inspect the cables. It appears to reside between the batteries and the starter.
