I have a 1984 F350, and ever since I've had it, I've had problems with the wipers NOT returning "home" when I turn them off. When they stop, they need to go down about 6 more inches most times. It seems they have ALOT of play in them, and I can push them down to the "home" position by hand. Is there bushings in the linkage that can be replaced, or what could be the issue. They seem to make a full sweep from top to bottom, and they go further down if the truck is sitting still. The pressure of the wind will keep them up a bit. It seems to be an issue with too much play.... IMO
They seem to make a full sweep from top to bottom...
To be clear, you're saying the wipers make a full sweep in the LOW or HI position? It's only when you select OFF that the wipers don't travel all the way down?
If so, that would indicate the linkage is fine. This also indicates the motor/gearbox is capable of driving the linkage full travel.
When you turn the switch to OFF, the internal park switch is what provides power to drive the wipers all the way down. If those switch contacts are dirty, the motor/gearbox will stop short of full down travel.
I've had my wipers refuse to park. I disassembled the gearbox and cleaned up the park switch and then all was groovy again.
Here's a suggestion to make the removal/installation easier:
If the park switch is bad, you can stop the wipers in any position with the dash switch. If they always park, but just in the wrong position, you can let it park, and then pull the wiper arms off and re-position them on the splines on the posts.
Thanks for the quick replies. I had thought about the park switch, but once it parks high on the windshield, I can reach out and push them down into the proper position. That's why I was thinking linkage issues. Possibly 2 separate issues?
As for pulling the arms off and moving them down, if I do that, will it not then move down onto the cowl as it wipes across the windshield? It does make a full sweep on Hi, Low, and on intermediate. It sounds like the park switch is the culprit. I'll get it in the shop in the next few days and see what I can find. I appreciate all your help!! I'll keep ya posted. Mark
