Neutral Safety Switch Confusion

I am wiring up an 82 351w and c6 combo into my 47 ford truck. When I look online for the neutral safety switch I see two very different parts:

The transmission I have doesn't have either of these. Which do I need to get the Neutral safety switch to work? Do I need both? I can see where the first switch installs at the shift linkage. But where would the second one go? I do not have any back up lights. I assume I could just bypass the NSS altogether but I want the safety of it not starting while in gear.

My next question: Do I just go from the ignition switch to the NSS then to the starter Relay/solenoid?

You will use the one on the left that fits over the linkage on the side of the transmission. Some have 4 wires, two for the neutral safety, two for the reverse lights. The one on the right is usually for a manual transmission. You are correct, ignition switch start-neutral safety-starter relay/solenoid.

When I first got my 53 f100 on the road I had to get it inspected, the first thing he did was put it in drive and push the start button. When it cranked over he failed it right then and there.

Okay, thanks for the information. Rockauto lists the one on the right as being for an automatic transmission and it was throwing me off. They don't sell the one on the left, and neither does autozone. Any idea where I can get one? Ebay?

I can't seem to find a switch like the one on the left that says it fits an 82 C6. I seem to remember that switch when I pulled the transmission from the truck, but it was discarded (huge mistake) when I refreshed the transmission a few years ago. I guess its possible that the transmission is an 83-86. I can find that type of switch for those models.

Will that switch fit on an 82? It seems like it will fit, since the 82 c6 and 83-86 c6 look to be cast the same.

The one on the right was also used in the AOD automatic transmission.

Try Autozone part number F414. Before you do that, look at your trans behind the levers were they come out. You should have two threaded holes on either side of the shaft and a short smooth spot with a slot or groove in it. This smooth large diameter spot is where the switch fits, and it bolts on with two bolts in the threaded holes.

I was able to purchase the oreilley equivalent of the part listed above. It fit up just right. When going through all my old parts I realized that I did still have the old switch, but the wiring had been ripped off of it (probably from when it was removed from the donor truck. The old switch looked identical to the one I bought, except it only had a place for two wires instead of four.

According to the link above and all the parts I can find online, this part isn't compatible with an 82 c6. So either I have an 83 transmission, this part won't work for some reason, or the 82 and 83 are compatible even though they aren't listed as such. Hopefully it will work.

Thank you for all the responses and advice.

It could be that the switches do swap on the tranys but they are not listed that way because that year may only use 2 wires and not the 4 wire one you have.
I would say use the 4 wire switch and if you only need 2 of the 4 wires so be it.

The switch on the right is for an AOD transmission, it won't work on a C6. They screw into the case and are operated by the linkage inside the transmission.

There will be four wires on the switch. Two of them are for the starting circuit, the other two are for the back up lights. The back up lights are optional, you don't need to wire that part up to make the switch functional.

Back up lamps became standard equipment in 1967 on F100/350, Bronco and Econoline.

I meant that wiring up the back up lights for his application was optional and not required to make it run.
