My ignition switch still works, but will not power the accessories (turn signal, radio, heater) after starting the truck and releasing the key. If I work the key back and forth a bit everything will power up till next time I start the truck. Is there something that can be cleaned/oiled? Do I need to just replace the switch? I'd rather not have to replace the key and tumbler if I don't have to.
If you turn your ignition back, to the left, then take a small pin or paperclip and stick in the small hole, you will be able to turn it a little more left to release the tumbler from the ignition electrical switch. Holding the outside housing, you can turn your tumbler back and forth to see if it is dragging. To clean, holding with the key hole down and spray liberally with carb or brake cleaner. You can insert the key and turn it back and forth, then spray again. After it dries, lube with a small amount of graphite, or a lube such as Triflow.
You will also be able to use a flat blade screwdriver to turn you ignition electrical switch. My guess is that this is your problem. The ignition electrical switch and tumbler are different replaceable parts.
I would also check the electrical connection on the back of the ignition for broken or over heated wires and connections.
I have a 79 f250 and my ignition seems wrong also. from key insert it will turn counterclockwise 1 click for acc. or clockwise 1 click to start and back to insert. no clockwise acc, so only 3 position not 4. recent owner so not sure if replaced but key is well used and ford.
Disconnect battery... then X2 with key in ignition and use the paper clip to turn left PAST the acc position and remove the tumblers assembly.Clean and reinstall, if still bad, time for a new ignition switch, pop and swap the tumblers in to the new ing switch.
Thanks Guys!
The tumbler came right out and wasn't gummy or sticky at all. Cleaned and lubed it anyway. The switch on the other hand was a pain to get the connector off of the back. I had planned on trying to clean and lube the old switch, but after the struggle getting it out I decided it wasn't going back together without a new one. $18 later and it works like it did 39 years ago.
