Question Ignition problem

I have a 76 f-150 and it ha trouble starting. Turn the key and it will just turn the engine over, if you rock the key back towards the off position and most of the way back again it will start. (sometimes) Any suggestions?

Just want to clear up one thing... are you aware that there are 2 parts to the in-dash ignition switch? The mechanical key and tumbler and the electrical switch that it moves... You need to replace the electrical part. Also inspect the wiring harness to the ignition, sometimes they melt and cause connection problems.

Found it

I am aware that the key switch is two pieces, I replaced them both because I couldn't get the tumbler out. It was actually the wireing to the brain bow that was fried. Thanks for the help

If this problem comes back check the mag pick up in the dist. I've seen a couple of these be intermittently bad. -Ed

It's actually the magnetic pick up inside of the distributor, if you post a thread in the corresponding "engine forums" or do a search I'm sure you would find some helpful advice. When I had this trouble, I replaced the complete distributor assembly. At Auto Zone cost was $45.00 for complete dist (or $23.00 for just the magnetic pick up), for that I was able to get a new magnetic pick up, new bearings, true (straight) shaft, new gear and roll pin and vac. advance.I did not have to disasemble / reassemble the old dist. either, just remove and replace (15-20 min. compared to an hour or more). Once I had the new one and original one side by side I noticed that the original one was much more difficult to spin by hand. After replacing it I have had no further trouble. -Ed

Yes, if you change the distributor you will need to reset the timing.
