Block difference?

I have a D9TE 460 and the block may be junk haven't got it pulled and torn down yet. So I am looking for spare block. I have found one but its casting number is D1VE. So my question is what is the difference will the D1VE block work with everything from my D9TE?

Mid year '79 (D9TE) Ford changed from internal balance to external balance and the D1VE is a 71, internal balance. When you peek at the D9TE block, look at the flywheel/flexplate for any 28 oz weights.....or not. That'll tell you if it's an early '79 or mid/late '79 block..... and the compatibility between them....if any.

Cylinders are a little longer in D9 at the bottom.

D1 is fine.

Blocks are interchangeable.

just swap the parts as you need.

Crank you use dictates balance.

From my understanding and research, the D9TE block has a higher deck height than the D1VE block. I'm unaware of any other difference. Like Mr. Beast stated, they changed 460's from internal balance to external balance, but that doesn't effect the block itself. That has to due with the rotating assembly.

Sorry, I mis..typed. The deck height change wasn't from D1VE to D9VE. It was from the previous casting to D1VE that had a deck height increase when they tried to lower emissions by lowering compression among other things.

Try this thread. Switching from D1VE block to D9TE - 460 Ford Forum

That forum would be your best bet at finding definitive 460 info.

I do believe his questions were answered on this thread. I was simply trying to help him with answers for future questions that he will most definitely have. Why not send him somewhere where all the info is concentrated on exactly what he's working on?

I need to fix the guts on my Bronco's tailgate, if there was a website dedicated solely to Bronco tailgates, that's exactly where I'd want to go. Now someone go create that site...

It is my understanding that the earlier crank will not swing in the later block.

In case of OP situation - late crank in early block no issue.

In case of someone wanting to use int. balance crank in D9 block, minor die grinder clearancing is req'd.

The deck height is the same between the two blocks. The cylinder length is what changed between the 2 blocks. People like to use the D9 for a stroker motor because the extra length makes the piston a little more stable at BDC.

Block casting number:

D1VE-6015-AB, or A1B or A2B = Internal balance: 1971/73 429; 1971/78 460; Some 1979 460.

D9TE-6015-AB = External balance, has a weighted crank spacer: Some 1979 460; 1980/97 460.

No 460's: In F100's after 1976, In Passenger Cars after 1978, In F150's after 1979. No 1980/82 F250/350 has a 460.

460 reintroduced in F250/350 in 1983.

Yeah; mind the castings, earlier block (d1ve) has more room downstairs, reason is to accomodate the bigger family (larger internal balanced weighted crank) D9 block has "deeper" walls, therefore the remodel has forfeited an internal balance assy. from being "bolt in" It might go in there, but at about 7:15 am moratorium sets in; causing for no more turning. Now, we should be able to use the Older block for any factory crank assy. You should be able to use the newer crank assy with any block, theoretically. But the newer block, well, needs the proper crank, the older crank, needs the proper block. "they will interchange" are remarks to be careful of. Don't slip in that oil!! Now, afterall, you do not want to bold a bunch of new parts in, start it, have the crankshaft make some nasty remarks then jump overboard.
