I was curious about the 'X' cast into my 428CJ block. Located next to the X is a 352 and a 47. In Christ's book, if I understand correctly, he mentions that the X indicates it is a race block. Is this the X he is talking about?
I know there are a lot of knowledgeable folks on this forum. Would some of you enlighten this newbie?
It could very well be. I've had a CX CJ block that was thick as hell. I think the X was a identifier to distinguish the regular blocks from the HD ones. Some will say the X blocks have a high nickel content where the cold truth is chromium and phosphorous were used for strengh. The original Ford blueprints and block formula and failure analisis have never mentioned a trace of nickle added to the blend. Some block metal analisis has proved this true as well. JMO, G.
I may be mistaken and corrected if so, but on the 428CJ blocks, the "X" or "C" or "A" are cast into the back of the block, under the flywheel/flexplate. You should also be able to see "428" behind one of the freeze plugs too.
Thanks for the replies. The scratched 'C' is indeed located at the back of the block. The 'X' I'm referring to is located just above the lifter bores on the right side of the engine.
The X as far as it's been determined is just an internal identifier for a heavy duty block. The "C" on the back determines it's a 428CJ block. I've seen the X on a few different blocks 390's as well. If your into the 428CJ's check out this site www.428cobrajet.org Click on component ID then on blocks to see the difference between a CJ and std 428 block. All other parts are listed as well. G.
