You can also help by getting a router for your system. With a hardware router your system can not be seen by the outside network. They also allow you to hook multiple computers to your DSL connection. They run about $40-75 at the computer stores depending on features.
Stopping popups, internet explorer errors on windows XP
Torque1st, I decided to buy a router (wireless) after it was suggested to me. The reason, I was told, was it acts as a firewall against spyware. I've had problems with websites that you can never seem to exit from. After finally shutting down my PC to remedy the problem and re-booting, I notice that some of my IE settings have changed (default search, home page, etc.). I assume this came from spyware that runs a script on my PC.
I haven't tried to install the router because I have a question. I sometimes have to use my home PC for work (via software) and was told that the router may block my access unless configured correctly. Is this true and what settings will need to be made?
I still need to add the software to block popups, when I get time.

Netscape 7.1 also has a good pop-up blocker. I use it mostly when browsing some of the more "adult entertainment orientated" sites. It beeps when blocking a pop-up. Sometimes it beeps so much it almost sounds like a symphony.hair

Originally posted by SHartman That's your problem. It has nothing to do with IE. Since you now have a static IP address you can be reached by popuppers by a "FEATURE" of XP that is enabled by default. To end your problem right click the My Computer icon and click manage in the menu that comes up. This will bring up the computer management window. Click on Services and Applications. Click on Services. In the list that comes up in the right hand window, locate and double click on Messenger. In the General tab locate and chage Startup type to Disabled. That should end your problem.
Thank you for this information, I just did it, before any problem occured.
