My local radiator shop has advised me to consider a replacement or recore of the radiator in my 1942 tonner (122" WB).
It has a 21C-8005 in it and I can order a reproduction from Brassworks with a three-row core. I think the four-row core would be too thick to fit at 3-1/2 inches.
the Green Bible indicates that my truck could use the 21T-8005 for "extra cooling." Do any of you have information or advice on the difference between the 21C and the 21T? I am guessing that the Brassworks four-row option is a replacement for the 59T which will not fit my truck.
All four inlets/outlets are 1-3/4" so that is not a problem. A new radiator will cost about $200 more than a recore so I will probably go that route---no more leaks. I just wondered whether it was worth the time and effort to consider a 21T-8005 to improve the cooling.
I'm running a 4 row Brassworks radiator in my '39 p/u with an 8ba. Lee at Brassworks was very helpful with measurements, advice, etc. Can't ay enough good things about Brassworks. I had to adjust the radiator a tad bit forward but that was it. IMO you can't have enough radiator in a flathead so my vote is for the 4 row if you can make it fit.
I have a 59A in my truck. I will do more measuring and try to figure a way to make the four row work. I agree that more cooling would be better. It is good to know that someone else was able to fit the larger radiator into the space. I will talk to Lee again.
I am using a radiator in my 1/2 ton woodie that came from a '48 1 1/2 ton. It has a 59ab .I would think that it may be 4 rows. Where do I look for the part #? I have done a lot of mixing and matching of radiators in my jailbar fleet, as most of the ones I buy have had the radiator stolen before I got them. I hope to have some time at lunch to do some investigating for you.
47 half ton woodie conversion has an 8RT radiator The steel frame of the radiator is 3 1/8" wide. I will guess 3 rows because in the front, the core is 1" back from the frame. On the inside, the core is 1/4" back from the frame. Quick math says the core is 1 7/8" thick. The fan is 2 1/2" from the core. Has the small necks at the top for later flatheads, so I have double hose on them.
47 tonner tonner PU with a 59ab currently has a thin aluminum repro radiator that was in when I got it, but has 5 1/4" between the fan and the core. I have a 21T that will go in soon. The 21 T is also 3 1/8" wide frame, but the core is flush with frame, front and back, so core is 3 1/8" thick. 4 row?
47 2 ton has a 59T with 3 1/8" frame and core flush both sides. Fan is 2 1/4" from core.
47 tonner panel has 59 ab engine, 21T radiator, 3 1/8" frame, and 3 1/8" core. I'm sure it would have 2 1/4" from the core to the fan as well, but I took it's front clip off a truck with a six cyl, so the rad was mounted in the forward position and I installed it that way on the panel. It has about 6" from the fan to the core. If it ever overheats, I may move it into it's rightful position, but for now it makes great access to the distributor and belts.
In review, the 4 row radiators look to be set at 2 1/4" from the fan and the 3 row, having the 1/4" inset at the rear has 2 1/2" to the fan. Looks like you will lose 1/4" of fan clearance by going to the 4 row. I say do it, but ask Brassworks if their 4 row core is also 3 1/8" thick. I'd love to come see your truck. I sneak off the island at least once a month for lumber runs.
But where are the Studebaker measurements? Seriously, I appreciate all the details on the various configurations. I hope you didn't have to do any of the measuring outside in the rain; it looked like Orcas was covered with a rain cloud yesterday.
The Brassworks guru does not encourage me to install their four row model since it is a full 3-1/2" in depth---although one of the earlier responders successfully fitted one into his 1939 truck. I hate to make an expensive mistake. I will have to decide among the three choices: gamble on fitting the four row Brassworks, settle for the three row Brassworks, or install a 21T. And my wife wonders why I can't sleep at night.
Let me know when you are off the island and have some time to stop by. I had the truck running last weekend and drove it a bit in driveway. I have more reassembly to do, but I am making progress.
