I tried to search, but could not find my exact answer.
I've read up on the PPEI tunes and their "emissions friendly" tunes. I like the reviews that I had read. My question is this. If I get an emissions friendly tune, will I still fail a smog check?
Probably, CARB is pretty gnarly. I don't think they'd be able to accurately tell you until you actually did it. Just remove the tune before you go to get it smogged. Then reinstall once its done.
I thought I read somewhere that the newer ECMs now store info that will let a dealer know if you’ve installed a tune on the truck? If so, you may risk warranty coverage if something powertrain related goes wrong.

Yep, if you're worried about warranty coverage at all, I would not install a tune. There are those who like to quote the Magussen-Moss Act but it's pure BS. People have spent serious money and time trying to fight using the Magnussen-Moss Act and have lost. The bottom line is you would have to hire a lawyer at $400/hr while the manufacturer has law firms in house with a near limitless budget.

I am not too concerned with the warranty at this point. I for some reason thought I had to get it smogged this year but I called the DMV and they informed me that I do not need to get it smogged until 2023 so now that issue has gone out the window.
I am pushing 30k on the clock and either am going to tune it now, or give it another 20-30k miles and then do it. I only drive about 12-14k a year so, that will be a long while to wait.

So our new CA trucks don't need a smog inspection for 5 years? That does open the possibility for tuning for me.

i wss told by the DMV main office in Sacramento that it is 6 years. Her exact words were “the truck will not need to be smogged until it is 6 years old”.
if I had to guess, I will need the smog in 2022. Either way, it also opened tuning for me so only a matter of time before I pull the trigger
I just bought my first diesel truck!! The smog inspection....WHAT A JOKE!!!! The guy didn't plug ANYTHING in!!! I was thinking... Does this guy know what he's doing??? He revved it 3 times...took his flashlight to the exhaust tip... looking for smoke i assumed.... he found nothing... or so I thought!! Then he had his wife or GF or whoever she was rev it 3 times AGAIN!!! Then he says... "I think you have an injector problem... but I'm going to pass you!!! ILMAO!!! I'm just glad he passed me!!
