Question Flat Towing Bronco

I want to convert my 1996 Bronco so it can be flat towed behind an RV. Problem is, it is equipped with an electric transfer case. Anyone out there know what is needed to remove the stock transfer case and replace with a manual transfer case? I have already converted the hubs to manual with WARN lock out hubs. Is there a manual transfer case that will fit without changing the drive shafts?

My Bronco has the 351 V8 with automatic transmission.

why not just unbolt the rear drive shaft at the rear pinion flange and hang it up with a strap up out of the way. its only 4 bolts to the rear diff flange. . even if you get a manual tcase you should still do this in my opinion. Super Easy

cant remember where i saw it but there is a company that makes a coupler that goes on the driveshaft just for towing.

one thing to remember is even with a manual transfer case you can't just put in neutral for towing. you wont get oil to the parts spinning.

12mm 12 point socket, unbolt the driveshaft and pull. Safest way I know, anything else is a risk. I had mine on a tow dolly and dropped the shaft and never had an issue.

Thanks Kemicalburns, disconnecting the driveshaft is a good idea but it really isn't what I wanted to do. It would be the easiest to perform but it would involve having to craw underneath on less than ideal surface conditions, not to mention possible weather conditions.

Also thanks to Redark1 and if anyone has information on this "driveshaft coupler" I sure would like to have more opinions and sources. Concerning your statement of spinning parts not getting proper lubrication which components are you thinking of?. The only spinning items would be the rear axle which should be self lubricating. And the front wheels, which have manual lockout hubs that would be in their "free" position.

Certain year rangers could be modified, with a neutral kit. I was wondering if the same could be done to our Broncos .
Haven't found it yet.

Manual transfer case was a factory option on the Bronco, and it has a neutral position. It's a direct bolt-in. Remove old transfer case, install manual case. Bolt the driveshafts up, remove access plate in the floor, cut hole in carpet, install shifter and linkage, install shifter boot, and (optional) hook up wiring plug so the 4x4 lights on dash still work. I did this swap on my 94 Bronco.

Thanks exranger06 that is exactly what I was looking for. There are not many salvage yards in my rural Oklahoma to ask for information. Do you happen to know what type of manual transfer case was offered for the Bronco? If I knew the type or model name/number I possible could find one on the web somewhere.

It's a BW1356, same model as the electric-shift unit.

Man that is interesting, thanks.....if it is the same Borg-Warner model I wonder if my existing case can just be converted. I could salvage the wrecking yards and find the mechanical linkage and shaft to convert mine. Has anyone ever performed such a retro-fit?

I looked at mine. No linkage attachment spots. I wonder if you can add a neutral, like they do to rangers.
