Smile Bronco II towing

I am looking at purchasing an 80's model Bronco II 4x4 to tow behind my RV.
What needs to be done to the Bronco to avoid transmission problems? Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!!

According to my Haynes manual, the transfer case oil pump is part of the output shaft, so the transfer case gets lubricated by the spinning of the driveshaft. As such, if you had a manual transfer case (or modified the electric shift case so it had a neutral position) and put it in neutral, you could tow the truck for extended distances without damage.

Thanks for the information.

The Bronco we are looking at has an electric 4x4 switch, would it be difficult to modify it for the neutral position?

My recollection is that you need to have the manual front hubs and the manual transmission in order to tow a Bronco II 4 wheels down.

mrshorty is correct. I think it would be very difficult to convert the electric shift to accept a neutral position. However, it is fairly easy to convert the electric shift to manual shift.

I'm not sure that it's difficult to get the electric shift to do neutral or not. I have vague recollections of seeing a kit (might have even been from Ford) that would add the neutral position to an existing set-up -- but that also might have been for a different transfer case.
Might also be possible to manually shift the electric shift t-case to neutral by removing the shift motor and turning the shaft by hand. I haven't actually been under mine, but it seems that the t-case has the 2H 4H and 4L positions stamped into the case, and there might even be an N stamped into the case. Might be worth investigating.
