Towing a Bronco

I have a 1973 Bronco with 302 and C4 transmission. I recently installed twin sticks to replace the J shifter. I want to install a tow bar on the front of the Bronco to pull it to the deer lease. The Bronco Owner's manual says to put the Transmission and the Transfer Case in Neutral but it still requires that I remove the rear drive shaft. On my 1995 Bronco with 302 and E4OD transmission, the Owner's Manual says to put the Transmission and Transfer Case in Neutral but does not require that I remove the rear drive shaft. Why is their a difference in towing requirements?

You will want to pull the read driveshaft, and might want to get a dummy yoke to stick back in for towing or tie the shaft up under the Bronco. The problem is the C4 won't pump oil without the input shaft turning so it's about like running dry.

If you shift a transfer case into neutral, doesn't that disconnect the t/c's output shafts from the input gear? If so, then it wouldn't turn the C4s inards, right??

Maui, that's what I thought. If there is no connection between the transfer case and the transmission, how can the transmission turn? To me, that is no different than the front differential being in neutral.

Putting both the transmission and the transfer case in neutral will according to some people be good enough to make it tow-able. It's really a topic that will get about as many for as against removing the driveshaft. I just happen to be one that prefers the added safety margin of removing it. If the manual says to remove the shaft then I figure they should know and when in doubt follow the manual.

Thanks Fordborn, where would I get a dummy yoke or do I need to make one?

While I am certainly not an expert, I have read that the very best thing to do is convert the real axle to have manual locking hubs.

If you wheel hard, this would be another weak spot.
