2018 or 2019? Should I wait?

Greetings all!
Dealer tells me I can still order a 2018 until the end of March. Should I wait for a 2019? Is there any upgrade for 2019 that is worth waiting for?
Looking for the F350 Gas Lariat 4x4, Crew, 8'.
Thanks!
Wes

At this point, I would just order a 2019 (which you can do now) since you'll have better resale down the road. Unless you can get a killer deal on a 2018 that would negate that.

Order the 2018. Wife bought a 2013 Explorer in April of 2012 and had 3/4 of year's mileage on it before the calendar turned to 2013. Buying very early in a model year gets you into a higher mileage bracket which will affect trade/resale value later on. OTOH, if you intend to keep it 'til the wheels fall off, get the 2019. So it may depend on how long you expect to keep it ... and judging by your avatar, I'd guess you'll have it only 5 or 6 years.

I've never heard of this and don't understand what you mean. Can you explain further? Thanks.

If you buy a 2019 in March of 2018, in a year, 2019, you might have 12000 miles on it. In 2 years, in 2020, your 2019 will have 24000 miles on it. Your one year old vehicle will have almost 25k on it, compared to the VERY LAST 2019 vehicle sold that now only has 12000 miles on it.

On the other hand, people see your vehicle as only one year old in 2020, even though it's two full years old. So if your'e a low-mileage driver, this can be beneficial.

Thanks, good point. I can see that being a bit of an issue in the early days but I'd expect to sell in a 5-8 year window where I think the mileage will be a wash and the year will be the primary price driver.

By then, the used market is going to look really different with 2020+ Fords/GMCs/Dodges all with improvements. Can't wait that long though.

Thanks for the explanation, and I failed to mention that last point even though it applies to me. My wife averages 1,000 miles/month, but I only average about 500/month (ride my motorcycle as often as I can). I bought a used 2010 F150 in 2012 that had 39K miles on it, and negotiated the price down due to the high mileage. But after 5-1/2 years of ownership, it only had 72K miles when I traded it towards my 2017 F250.

Milage, good point.

Never thought of the milage aspect. Excellent point. This sight is a wealth of knowledge, because of its members.

Yes, I have a 2016 F350 Diesel. Trading that in for a 2018 F350 Gas. Ordered it today. Checked almost every box on the Lariat line.

I believe I will be keeping this one for the long haul, no pun intended.

I have the Ford Connect on a 2018 Fusion, don't use it, don't think I'm gonna use it, don't think I'd use it on the truck.

Sony or B&O, couldn't tell the difference if you hit me in the head with them.

Thus, decided to go with the 2018 and get it in April instead of waiting till August for delivery of the 19.
Thank you all for the input.

Wes,
Thinking or ordering a 2018 also. What gears are you going with on yours?. If you don't mind me asking why the switch from diesel to gas?

SDTruckMan;

Ordered the 4.30 Electronic Locking because I plan on towing a 5th Wheel. (Aprox 10,000 lbs.)

The reasons I'm ditching the Diesel and going gasser are many. I'll try to list a few.

Above all else, I hate the Diesel because I don't understand it. This is of course my lack of knowledge, not anything negative on the truck. I understand a gas engine. I've worked on them, and can work on them. That being said, the other reasons are as follows:

If I run out of DEF fluid, the truck will go into Idle only mode. So, a $65,000 truck will basically shut down because All Gore says it should. To me this is government overreach at its worst. True, if I don't put fuel or oil in the truck it will also shut down, but the principle of big brother telling me I have to essentially let Al Gore pee in my truck in order for it to run is too much to bear. (DEF = 60% water, 40% Urea) DEF is also expensive, and an extra caveat of owning a Diesel and there are many.

When we first picked it up, we said, "Wow, for a Diesel it's really quiet." No so much a year and a half later. I was however warned that with age, the diesel will get more noisy, but I did not think it would happen this soon.

Every other oil change is $300 because you have to also change the two, yes two, fuel filters because diesel engines are very sensitive to contaminants in fuel, especially water. Which leads me to...

You have to drain the water/fuel separator once a month for two reasons. One, to get the water out if present, and two to determine if the gas station you are using is quality.

Maintenance costs are prohibitive if out of warranty. Three years and or 100,000 miles (Drivetrain) is just when the EGR cooler or fuel pump fails, or injectors got enough water from a bad tank at an obscure station that you had to stop at, that the cab of the truck has to come off to service it. (Slight exaggeration, but only slight.)

Fuel gelling.

Cold starting. The block heater does little, and you have to estimate when you are going to use the truck to schedule when you are going to plug it in, or use a timer. What?

Turbo lag.

Turbo still has the ceramic bearings flaw. Why Ford did not fix this is astonishing. So yea, you're gonna need one of those just when its out of warranty.

Diesel fuel costs more. I've heard that a diesel gets better fuel mileage. The research, (Others posts, various blogs) shows the difference is between 14.7 mpg city and 14 mpg city. (Again, exaggeration, but really really close) What am I to do with all that extra fuel money i'm saving on .7 mpg?

Lastly and most important, the diesel option, factoring in taxes, is a $10,000 upgrade. (aprox.) You can check a hell of a lot of boxes for ten grand. And when I ordered my 2018 Gas Lariat, I checked almost every single one. Giving up the diesel gets me options I have no business being entitled to. As a daily driver, yes I want seven cameras and a heated steering wheel with a moonroof the size of my first apartment.

I've heard the warnings. If you are going to pull anything bigger than a pop-up trailer, you need a diesel or the earth will literally stop spinning.

When I'm towing my 5th wheel over the Himalayan Mountains, yes I'm gonna say, "I wish I had the diesel."

...but until then, I'm going with what I understand. Gas.

I hope anyone who reads this understands it's satire. Please, no fact checking. I embellished here and there to make a point and to get a chuckle. I hope I did both.

I'm told ordering 2018's ends at the end of this month (March).

Good luck with your order, and your new truck.

Life is short, have fun and drive whatever ya like.

Wes

That's a bunch of bunk! The world revolves beneath my diesel F250! Loved your explanation, especially the Al Gore peeing in my tank part. Reps sent & good luck with your purchase!

Wes,That was one of the best posts I've read in awhile!Ive only ever owned diesels since 02 and never a gas truck.I keep going back and forth with gas and diesel.I still don't know what I'm buying,I've just been waiting to order a 19MY.

Do you have any concerns with resale value on a gas truck?
