The reasons I'm ditching the Diesel and going gasser are many. I'll try to list a few.

Above all else, I hate the Diesel because I don't understand it. This is of course my lack of knowledge, not anything negative on the truck. I understand a gas engine. I've worked on them, and can work on them. That being said, the other reasons are as follows:

If I run out of DEF fluid, the truck will go into Idle only mode. So, a $65,000 truck will basically shut down because All Gore says it should. To me this is government overreach at its worst. True, if I don't put fuel or oil in the truck it will also shut down, but the principle of big brother telling me I have to essentially let Al Gore pee in my truck in order for it to run is too much to bear. (DEF = 60% water, 40% Urea) DEF is also expensive, and an extra caveat of owning a Diesel and there are many.

When we first picked it up, we said, "Wow, for a Diesel it's really quiet." No so much a year and a half later. I was however warned that with age, the diesel will get more noisy, but I did not think it would happen this soon.

Every other oil change is $300 because you have to also change the two, yes two, fuel filters because diesel engines are very sensitive to contaminants in fuel, especially water. Which leads me to...

You have to drain the water/fuel separator once a month for two reasons. One, to get the water out if present, and two to determine if the gas station you are using is quality.

Maintenance costs are prohibitive if out of warranty. Three years and or 100,000 miles (Drivetrain) is just when the EGR cooler or fuel pump fails, or injectors got enough water from a bad tank at an obscure station that you had to stop at, that the cab of the truck has to come off to service it. (Slight exaggeration, but only slight.)

Fuel gelling.

Cold starting. The block heater does little, and you have to estimate when you are going to use the truck to schedule when you are going to plug it in, or use a timer. What?

Turbo lag.

Turbo still has the ceramic bearings flaw. Why Ford did not fix this is astonishing. So yea, you're gonna need one of those just when its out of warranty.

Diesel fuel costs more. I've heard that a diesel gets better fuel mileage. The research, (Others posts, various blogs) shows the difference is between 14.7 mpg city and 14 mpg city. (Again, exaggeration, but really really close) What am I to do with all that extra fuel money i'm saving on .7 mpg?

Lastly and most important, the diesel option, factoring in taxes, is a $10,000 upgrade. (aprox.) You can check a hell of a lot of boxes for ten grand. And when I ordered my 2018 Gas Lariat, I checked almost every single one. Giving up the diesel gets me options I have no business being entitled to. As a daily driver, yes I want seven cameras and a heated steering wheel with a moonroof the size of my first apartment.

I've heard the warnings. If you are going to pull anything bigger than a pop-up trailer, you need a diesel or the earth will literally stop spinning.

When I'm towing my 5th wheel over the Himalayan Mountains, yes I'm gonna say, "I wish I had the diesel."

...but until then, I'm going with what I understand. Gas.

I hope anyone who reads this understands it's satire. Please, no fact checking. I embellished here and there to make a point and to get a chuckle. I hope I did both.

I'm told ordering 2018's ends at the end of this month (March).

Good luck with your order, and your new truck.

Life is short, have fun and drive whatever ya like.

Wes
Sounds like you and I made the same decisions and bought the same truck!

Only thing I've got to say about diesel vs gasser, is come to Colorado and Drive I70 from Denver to Vail and back. The diesel will win, especially at 11k elevation. Gas suffers greatly with high elevation, whereas diesel is less affected. I got tired of gas years ago, and it is THE reason why all the extra costs of a diesel are well worth it. Start pulling weights in the teens, or even up to the max of the truck, while climbing a 7% grade, and you're losing speed while the diesel is doing just fine. Even my butt-dyno can tell the difference between a gas engine and diesel at 11k. Wife used to have a BMW 328d (diesel) and that thing would just sail over the mountains compares to a gas car. The power loss near the top was less significant. Plus, we got 53mpg driving to Chicago one time. But really, if you're just driving in the hills or flats, below a mile in elevation, the gasser is going to be just fine.

Speaking as a driver, the gas engine is exactly what I want. Speaking as a shareholder, I highly recommend the diesel.

Saw above that 2018 ordering ends at the end of March. Does that mean if I am ordering a 2018 in April I am still good for the 6-8 week order, or does that mean any order after March is going to be for a 2019 and I will have to wait until August to receive it?

Thanks for the help- talked to my dealer yesterday and he suggested ordering vs lot purchase. From his experience ~15 years, he has said a May delivery is best due to usually aggressive incentives.

The end of March date is a soft date several people have been told by their dealers, not sure if there is anything confirmed. Not sure if I would bet my life on it. For fleet orders, they will not even accept an 18 order any longer. If you want a 18, I would do it quickly.

If it is entered as a 19 order, correct, you are looking at late summer or fall as the earliest as 19 production does not start until late June, with a Two week factory shutdown in July.

I drove that section of interstate eastbound with a gas V10 in my '01 Excursion while not towing. Had cruise control on and it downshifted all the way to 2nd gear just to maintain 55 MPH. I don't care what the OP buys, but I will say that the power of this 6.7L diesel (my first diesel) is extremely intoxicating.

I went from a 351 Bronco to the 6.7. Good Lord. I'll never go back to gas in a truck. Maybe a Raptor but not a hauler or tower.

Looking for the F350 Gas Lariat 4x4, Crew, 8'.
Thanks!
Wes
The stereo is upgraded to the B&O system as well as the availability of FordConnect that allows you to remote start the truck from your phone, lock and unlock your doors, see how much fuel you have left, schedule maintenance, etc. Two new colors are being introduced. If you like the White Gold you better order or buy an '18 because they are discontinuing that color. No more CD player on the 2019 trucks either...

If you run out of gas the truck will also stop. LOL Not nit picking but that comes under operator error, not diesel deficiency.

I'm with ya. If you don't need the diesel, don't get the diesel. Too much cost, too much risk. If there's no reward, don't bother.

Someones sticker listed it as a $9950 option. Nope, nope, nope. Do not want.
