Tune up

I will need to do a tune up on this old beast and wanted to ask some dumb questions.
My Flat head is not a 47 but the no on the back says it is probably a 51. Anyhow are there brands of parts that last longer than others? I plan to replace wire set as it is 20 years old.
Considering i plan a very long trip with this thing, would you consider a move to more modern ignition for reliability? I do want to take a 1947 truck on tour so it sort of answers this question but perhaps there is an argument for it. I'd take spares and so on but still.

I also need to rebuild this carb and doubt there is anything more than a standard rebuild kit for this. There may have been other brand rebuild kits in 1955 but I doubt there are now.

Thanks

Engine reminder...

Can you remind us what engine you have, (6 cyl or 8)? Photos of the engine would help.

The fuel in the glass bowl on the fuel pump looks like root beer! Before you rebuild the carb, you should get the rusty gas tank professionally cleaned and sealed, or just replace it if it's too expensive to restore it. I also recommend replacing the fuel lines at the same time and adding a modern fuel filter.
