Ive been chasing a oil leak for a while and have figured out it is the front seal. Is there any way or removing the wear ring and installing a new one with out purchasing the special tools. Thanks
Yes but it is tricky. You have to put a slight cut mark in it with a dremel and remove the sleeve carefully. You can find some youtube videos on it
You may get lucky and it does not have one. I recently did my motor and mine did not have a wear sleeve, but the new kit came with one.
The install is a piece of cake. Clean it, use the provided Loctite and slowly/evenly drive it in with a piece of wood....very easy
Now the rear is a different story....the tool is nice but it can be done without it
I watched a you tube video and decided that was a little too tricky for me to tackle. I was under the impression that the new wear ring had to be installed recessed onto the crank thus the installer. None of the mechanics Ive called have replaced this on a 6l. I have found a diesel guy not too far but he said he was swamped and couldnt look at it for over a month. Thank-you for the response.
The tool does them together but it is not needed if you have an idea on how to install the sleeve first then the seal evenly.
Of course when I did it, my motor was on a stand, but it can be done in the frame.
The only way to know if yours has a sleeve is to disassemble it, but at that point what is the point of reassembly just to have someone else do it....you might have to wait until you find a local mechanic.
I tried an independent shop that hacked it up three times, making it successively worse each time. No special tooling at the shop. Ford was around $350 but at least the problem was fixed. Your mileage may vary.

Has your front seal ever been changed? If not it will not have a wear ring. The new seal will have a wear ring. You can rent the proper tool from www.freedomracing.com
.
Front seal has not been changed since Ive owned the vehicle I was looking at their site (.freedomracing) But didnt see rental of the tool. I will call them. Thank-you
Removing the wear sleeve if you have it is not fun, and likely just as difficult as the videos you have viewed if you do not have the corrects tools. But installation is simple. I recommend using a rubber mallet to get the sleeve on as far as possible(aka flush to the snout of the crankshaft). To get it to the proper depth past the front of the crankshaft is easy, all you need to do is install the crank pulley and with all 4 bolts, walk the pulley on to the crankshaft. Approximately 1/2 turn per bolt at a time in a criss cross pattern until the bolts are ready for torque. The sleeve will end up in the correct location and you won’t have any sealing/leaking issues. Have done this with many trucks, at least 30. No issues yet and We must honor a 36k warranty at work. The crank pulley sits over the snout of the crankshaft, that’s why it moves the sleeve into the proper location. Just take it slow.
