Any tips for installing rope seal?

I'm getting ready to install the main oil seal in my 215 OHV inline 6. I'm using the old style rope seal. Anybody have any tips to share? I have consulted several manuals but I'm wondering if I need to pre-soak the seal or prepare it any special way? I've found the shop manual takes a lot for granted. This is obviously a pretty important step in my engine rebuild and I want to get it right.

Thanks!

If the crank is out it is not a bad job... SEAL MUST BE SOAKED IN OIL... roll seal into grooves using a socket, leave a little above the flat and trim with razor blade. If crank is in, loosen the mains a little bit, a rear main seal kit is avail. (Lisle tools??) use sheet rock screw or screw supplied with tool kit to remove old seal, might have to us a small punch to help things out, be careful of crankshaft. The installation tool is like "chineese finger" again oil soaked seal , pull new seal in place and trim. A dab of RV sealer wont hurt. As you are rebuilding I assume the crank is out. Good luck, George
