installing a harmonic damper ????? need a tool????
i actually pulled off my timing cover/water pump in the fall to replace the gasket where there was a coolant leak on my 95 f150 5.0L. Shortly after i aquired an oil leak and now i finally have the time to work on it. When i reinstalled the damper i just lined it up best i could on the crank and keyway and tightened up the bolt, the leak appears to be coming from the front oil seal in the timing cover where the damper slids onto the crank. Is it possible that the damper isnt all the way in since i didnt use a tool to install the damper??? Or more likely the front oil seal is just bad??? How is the install tool used i just read about it in a magazine and wondering if that is why i might be leaking at the seal. Might be easier to try the install tool and see rather than trying to install a new oil seal then use the insall tool. any info would be greatly appreciated thanks

I think its more likely that the front seal got pinched. I have always just use the bolt and washer to install ford dampers. I have used the install tool for chevy's they go on a lot harder.
before you installed the front cover you should have replaced the seal. their cheap and relatively easy to install. Like dirt racer said you don't need any special tool to install as long as you torqued to spec and didn't overtorque. You should always lube the seal just before you install the cover. good guess that you may have either pinced the seal or it could have distorted slightly if put on dry. confirm that the leak is infact coming from the seal and not the cover to pan.
I just replaced my seal and damper this last weekend, your local parts store has a puller/installation tool you can put a deposit on and get your money back when you return it. I had no problems and the job took maybe an hour start to finish. The seal can be a little tricky going in i used a block of wood and walked it around the seal tapping it untill it was flush mine was leaking bad untill i did this now problem solved!good luck

I install harmonic dampeners by just tightening the bolt. Should only need a tool to remove it (with Fords in my short experience). I would take a look at the seal.
Probably might not hurt if your reusing your old balancer to get one of those collars to go on the balancer shaft incase your old seal has worn a groove into the metal. If you have a groove worn into the balancer then even with a new seal it may still leak. just my .02
