On the same topic, I have a vent hose that runs from the cap down down the side of the radiator. I assumed it was just a vent hose. I wonder if I could do this and it be used as a overflow?

It is just a vent hose...it vents your antifreeze onto the street.
Stick it in an overflow catcher of some type and make certain the hose goes to the bottom of the container so when everything cools down it will be sucked back up into the radiator.

P.S. My custom overflow is a very thick 1 qt. glass bottle from a local dairy.
I have a cap on my f150 that should suck the overflow back into the radiator as it cools. I have the cap listed in the link below. I though it was OEM, from what i'm not sure. Please see #19 at the end of the thread.
I just asked for a cap for a '74 F250 with a 390 at Autozone and this is what I got. It has the seal to let it draw coolant from the over flow and is working perfectly.
Looks identical to mine. Before I replaced the radiator, I used a piece of vacuum hose to hold the lever up so it wouldn't build up too much pressure. The radiator was leaking pretty badly. Eventually, it began leaking just due to gravity so I replaced it with the Spectra you see in the picture.
