You also might check the radiator cap. When the engine cools, it's supposed to draw coolant back into the system from the overflow bottle, keeping the radiator full. You should have a small hose nipple right below the radiator cap opening where the hose goes for the overflow tank.

It amazes me how much trouble BAD radiator caps cause. How many people forget them or to check them. In the 60s radiator caps were the first things people checked when they had a problem.
