Purchase help Supercab!

Hey guys.

Still looking, this damned 4x4 supercab in Spokane continues to mock me. I found a real nice looking 2WD in Western WA that looks good, any thoughts between these two:

As I talk to my wife who says, "do what you want" I'm leaning pretty hard towards supercab. I'm in the national guard and travel a lot. Supercab would be very useful to store my crap out of the weather. Since my bronco will not be getting a 4BT I'm going to put one in a truck.

Thoughts on lifting a 2wd supercab and throwing a ZF5 in there vs just getting a 4WD supercab to start? It's 100% about the look for me, although 4WD is a nice to have. The spokane rig has rust and a tcase issue, but a stirling and np205. The 2WD truck just has 1000 gas tanks.

I like the 460 truck. The price seems ok. But lifting it is something I can't wrap my head around, probably should go with the 4x4 if that's the plan.

There's a 79 F350 supercab 4x4 in Spokane. From what I gather this is a super rare truck so could have some value there, though in my opinion it is a bit rough for the money. Given the plow on the front it could be in need of some suspension and drivetrain work, and hopefully doesn't have any frame damage.

That one is also very tempting, haven't emailed him but I'm not paying over 5k for anything. There's a heavily restored f100 here in Tri Cities for 5k.

Wonder if 3k no plow would be insulting.

I should say, I'd be happy to pay 5k, for 0 rust OR some rust but very well taken care of drive train.

This has also been on my radar for awhile, but that 4wd. I just love the stance so much more ha.

$2,500 for a “rust free” 460 with air? I fail to see the quandary.

prices on west coast are super cheap, super stupid on the east coast. The $2,500 truck seems more like a 10k truck unless I’m missing something.

4wd SC stock set up not to beat on..a no brainer to me. That guy does not have the "rest your arm/elbow on the seat edge, pop pull the xfer case into 2wd trick" down. lol

The F350 would be tempting. Flatbeds on single wheel trucks are a turn off for me. And also, I always consider a plow truck or one with a goose neck ball and beat up bed inside are sure signs the truck has had the guts worked out of it. It does seem he's tried to keep the truck up but it now needs a clutch. The $2500 460 truck still seems like the no brainer.

I'm with willowbilly...the plow truck has had the crap kicked out of it. the black/grey shows signs of a rough life, the green one has had a bunch of money thrown at back dating the motor, and not much else. the brown one seems like the most honest truck, and the most truck for the money.

Ok last question then, I'm in Eastern Washington, so we get snow. I've never had a 2wd vehicle before. Do these trucks have limited slips or lockers from the factory and how does a 2wd do in the snow?

With a 4bt being the plan for it 2wd means an easier setup less maintenence and more mpgs. Also no worries with crazy tires and not being able to reach the dipstick ha.

I’m in Spokane too, and while it is only my opinion, a 2wd supercab in the snow here would be a booger to handle without a lot of traction weight in the bed and studded tires at least on the rear. Being as long as they are, most of your weight is going to bias to the front of the vehicle, and with an empty bed the truck will have a hard time getting any traction to offset its own bulk.

As for any advertisements for 79 F350 4x4 supercabs, just a word of warning..... beware of those. I went to go see one up in Elk that was advertised that way, and it wasn’t. The owner had put F350 emblems on it, but the vehicle was an F250......it didn’t have the telltale parts that indicate an F350.... like Dana 60 up front (his was D44), 4 core radiator (his was 2 or 3), 9” dual diaphragm brake booster (his was 11” single diaphragm), etc.... some guys know the F350 is like a unicorn, and they will try to snow people with the emblem.

Anyway, good luck with your hunt.... i’ve already got mine (Buford), but may eventually consider a 2wd F350 version as a tow rig for Buford (i’m weird like that).

That's my thought as well.

I've contacted the 4x4 guy, hoping for a response soon. So far nothing.

The 2wd will let it go to me for 22, at that price I can probably resell it for more barring serious issues.

Here's another option for you. If you plan a 4bt swap anyway it might not matter if it's currently running.

Well, being over here on the east side like you are, I may be able to provide another option, on at least power plants. I still have the complete 400 from Buford from when I originally purchased him. Granted, it is all in pieces, but I have them crated. It was a relatively stock 400, but did have a fair RV cam in it. Regardless, should you need to find an engine, I could let it go pretty cheaply. As I and others here could tell you, the 400 is no slouch on power if built correctly. Anyway, just wanted to drop an option for you should you have a need.
