Oil temp

Hey guys, I just recently but an sct x4 for my 05 and I hooked up the gauges today and saw a 30 degrees deference between my oil and coolant temps. I was driving at a constant speed of 70 on a flat surface. My ECT was reading 192 while my EOT got as high as 222. As soon as I got off the freeway, my ECT was 194 and my EOT was around 216. Is this a sure sign that my oil cooler is clogged? I just recently changed my oil and I have a sinister diesel coolant filter. Truck has 200k miles and I don’t know the last time the cooler was replaced. Also, I just tuned the truck and turned the EGR off on my sct but I don’t have it deleted. Could that cause my higher oil temps?

The egr thing has nothing to do with oil temp

Your signs point to oil cooler clogging, but just to be sure, try the test again a little differently. Get up to temp, which will probably take 15 mins, then drive 55-60mph for 10+ minutes on a flat highway. This should be done with the truck unloaded, no towing. If you have a heavy truck, like a utility body or something, your results may be a bit off.

okay, that’s a normal driving day for me and my ECT’s are usually 192-194 and my EOT are usually 210-214. This was the first time I saw a 30 degree difference and it was after me doing some hard footed driving and a lot of turning the engine off and on.

Over 15 degrees constant and you have a problem.

Is there a way to unclog the oil cooler instead of replacing it? I don’t have the cash or the time to replace it myself right now . I saw you can flush the system out with water and purple power. Is that a possibility?

Try a back flush, not perfect but it works for me, had to flush twice so far, have a filter now and it's behaving better, just under the magic 15 delta. I have a cooler ready, but no time 😩

I back flushed mine a year ago, went from a 20* delta to 5-8* using Restore and well water, it was clogged with gel. If you are clogged with rust back flushing might not do the trick.. Make sure your temp readings are accurate, check oil and coolant temps after the engine has sat over night.

I just installed this for later on. My deltas are 4-5 degrees and my oil cooler only has about 20,000 miles on it but I figured I’d like to back flush it at some point and this device is very nice. It was very easy to install since I am upgrading my turbo and had room to work but it can be done with the turbo in.

The thing to remember regarding the oil temp is that the hotter it is, the more quickly you will see the o-rings degrade/harden. Since, the oil in the pan is significantly hotter than the EOT reading, then the oil in the HPO rails is most likely significantly warmer also.

Just another reason to keep the oil cooler working well.
