I don't know the details of Jimmy's Pricing and Warranties. He's built me some highly modified transmissions over the past 12 years, so my build/application pricing etc, will be quite a bit different from most. I would advise anyone to not buy a transmission off of CL. They sound like a great deal/price and warranty, but no one in my opinion can re-build and sell a quality built 4R100 Transmission for those prices. If you do some research you'll see that a complete quality over haul kit alone will run right about $600 hundred. So I don't think a guy could buy a quality rebuilt unit for 7-8 dollars. .This is one area (Transmission & TC )you DONOT want to skimp on. The basic well built Transmission prepped for towing is gonna run right around $3600, this will include an upgraded TC. Ford sells a great unit that comes with 3/36,000 warranty iirc. It does also come w an HD TC as well and from what I understand, they are a very well built transmission. This unit is as I mentioned the basic 4R100 build and will serve most guys for DD/towing & light mods.
Anyhow, the price goes up from there with other HD upgrades that one might want, such as Shift-Tugger kits/Red Eagle alto clutches/ billet shafts and so on.. But again, most guys don't need these mod's. Most will just require a Tugger kit and a few other small mods that Jimmy likes to do to help the transmission run much more efficiently. Give him a call. He really enjoys helping to educate guys so that they don't get ripped off by shops building these cheap builds that we see out there.

Okay, got a call back today. Don't know how this is going to work out but he has a new guy long time helper working in his shop. He'll be gone all week. He said to tow it in but I am going to R & R it myself. Sucks, but the cheaper way to go for me. As it goes on I'll let every buddy know how it goes. At this point I word of been better off with the HD4R100 to start with. We'll see.

Does the option of sending it to him exist?

I'm don't see why not but I need this truck for one more trip with the grandkids to Glamis in March so I'd like to drive the trans out there and watch it being repaired. When he gets back next week we'll see. They said he's at some desert races. If not, it will be done local or the Ford unit HD. Is your new convertor 3 disk? His older units were not for the tow master.

You mentioned getting old and getting under a truck again are like oil and water... they don't mix well.

I went to the "big boy's" website, and at the bottom he says

"WARRANTY COVERAGE INCLUDES A LABOR ALLOWANCE FOR R/R TO BE DETERMINED BY TIME AND SERVICE OF TRANSMISSION."

Do you think it might be better to trailer your truck to him so as to get the full value of the warranty promised, and save yourself some aggravation that could (literally) add injury to insult?

I guess I could rent a trailer and tow it but I'd rather not. I have someone in mind to help or maybe ever R&R it if he would. He use to do Ford work at Ford but now dose it his self. Won't be free but could save me. Thank you for asking.

I'm not sure what listing you are seeing, but that is way too cheap.
There is a guy on CL in Ventura that is quoting me $2800 with a HD triple clutch billet TQ and all HD parts. His base price is 1600 W/O TQ or the install. That is all I know about him. His price seems realistic. I'm not sure you can get a good build kit for $700.
Let us know what you come up with!

For me, its not adding up. We stopped on the c way back from buying my truck. In short, the dudes' cool. The "shop" is more of a compound in which, the way i understood him was, he has a little 20x20 shop dedicated to JUST TRANS...AKA..HIM. The rest of the compound is "service" in which the other players have that role....either way, a warranty is a warranty. And for 5k+ it better last more than 60k miles of part time towing.
