advice, trans failure

Should be out there right now but still mad. Was going up Cajon pass FWY15 in the truck bypass and a boom then know trans. Won't work forward or reverse or 4x4. Towed it home. Was going to dumont dunes with the grand kids and family. Had worked hard to get things ready but it didn't work out. Any suggestions on what it could be? Could it be the tranfer case? No fluid on the ground just know movement in the drive shaft. I was thinking output shaft.

Easiest cheapest thing to start with is pull the pan and see if there are abnormally big shards in there...

Dang Chet that sucks! Do you have a good local shop? Or pony up for a John Woods?

I think if it was transfer case you'd see a broken case and fluid everywhere.

Thanks guys for getting back. I'm not sure what way I'm going to go, I was to mad today to even look at it . I did unload all the ice chests and everything I packed for the trip. I don't want to say yet who did this trans till they get back with me. It was one of the big boy's. That's why i'm so mad. My truck is stock except a DP tuner, T500 and upgrade from E99 to late. 203K on the clock. I thought I did the trans at 134K but the receipt says 145K when the work was done. Just blows with having to get under there at my age now and my health issues. Anyway I was just going with the KC38R when I got back and was ordering 160/100 injectors. That's off now. I was even going to do the front seats, the driver one has needed it for some time. I bought this truck new so it hasn't been abused. It has exhaust and 6.0l trans cooler to but nothing that would of hurt it. Still not a bad looking truck.

Sorry for the mechanical issues you are having. There is never a good time for this sort of thing to come up, but at least you were all safe and made it home to regroup.

I hope by "big boy's" you mean someone that will take care of you and the transmission. At just under 60K miles on a transmission, I would not expect problems. Especially if it were from a known builder and on a stock truck other than the Tuner.

Is it possible that the DP Tuner was causing issues that were not very apparent to you during daily driving? I am not very knowledgeable on the 4R100 and how the tuners effect them other than what I read from time to time here.

Keep us informed.

When you put the truck in park does it still roll?

If it does then it could be the Transfer Case. e99 trans cases have lube issues. check out this thread

No, in park it doesn't roll. Didn't think about this either, I guess that means the out put shaft should be good. Sous, I had no problems with the DP tuner. Trans worked very good with it. I liked to drive in the 60 tow tune most of the time. I always started it in stock setting also till warm. I never abused the truck either. I have nine tunes. I use to use the 60 econo tune but like the 40 tow tune better. I just started using the 40 tow tune because my mpg went up and had no problem on Cajon pass here on I-15, it never slowed down or got hot. Pulling I run 1900rpm's up the pass at 61 mph. I have a CC, DRW's 4x4 8 foot bed with 4.10 pos. Get around 12.5 mpg in that tune pulling around 10K. For automatic, to me that's not bad. Now if I use the 80 tune, unloaded in idaho or wyoming going 70 and little faster sometimes, not towing, I hit around 17 mpg. Not bad for that big of a truck with auto and 4.10's. I here on here people get more but I've never seen it in the real world between me and friends with the same truck and gears. 6 speed different story.

That sucks Bonanza, specially knowing you had it rebuild by one of the "Big Boys". Hope they do you right and fix the problem.

If the problem is the transmission and it’s done Unless your going to upgrade the transmission a lot I would reccomend dropping in a new motor craft one. When I did mine it was only a few hundred bucks more to do so than a rebuild. The original lasted 200k and I figure with myself doing thenfluid changes I can get at least 200k more.

No he didn't, I drove all the way out there and he said I don't here it. That's because once driven a while it's hard to here. I did let him service it, at my cost, but no he didn't look to fix any thing. Even at Andy's place some of the guys said do you here this when slowing down. So it's been a while, let me give him a chance. Thing is, now I have to pull it, or have it towed. Sucks

From what you've described and from my personal experience, I'd bet it was the TQ converter that gave out. There's a guy in Sun Valley CA that builds a great transmission for our trucks. His name is Jimmy Galante, he owns and runs Racetrans.com. His number is 818-522-2568 and he's a great guy to talk to. If you call him let him Carlos Briceno gave you his info. I've dealt with him for years now. I know most folks will mention bts or john wood and from what I've read they both do excellent work as well. I've never dealt with bts, but I have talked to John Wood, and he is a great guy to talk to as well. Anyhow give Jimmy a call see what he has to say.

Country...you have a ballpark figure on his trans/warr? I'm seeing ttans advertised with 700-800 proce tags from shops on clist, with 3yr unl miles. Doing the math, that puts a loooonnnnggg time to be equivalent to a JW trans price.
