The speedometer cable is supposed to be lubricated in normal routine maintenance.
Speedometer cable lubricant: D2AZ-19581-A or equivalant.
White lithium grease in a tube works really well as a substitute.
Remove the instrument cluster, and unhook the cable from the transmission or transfere case. Remove the speedometer cable gear at the end. Then pull the cable out of the cable housing using needle nosed pliers from the speedometer head end. Be carefull not to break the plastic end off the cable. Check the cable for excessive wear or fraying, replace if nessecery. Generously lube up the cable with white lithium grease or lubricant. Slide the cable back into the housing. One or more treatments may be nessecery if the cable is really dry.
