2002 7.3 Excursion
Ran into town today and thought I was going to have to get a ride back home! Turn the key and it cranks for a second or so, but not long enough to start the engine. Sounds to me like the starter is disengaging from the flywheel. Had to try 30 times before it spun long enough for the engine to start, glad that the engine was warmed up already.
It's been doing this intermittently, like once every couple weeks, for the past couple months, made it hard to test.
Is there anything I need to check, or clean? Or is it just time for a new starter?
I would check the electrical connections on the starter and make sure the mounting bolts are there and in all the way. It is not uncommon for the bolts to come loose.
Check your major electrical connections as well, 2 ground on either side of the block near the fan and positive connections on the batteries.
Each of these are free and should only take a few moments.
It could be a failing starter drive. When they are going south they will slip. You start to crank normally after about a second you get the zing! The Zing is the started speeding up after the drive slips. If that is the case, you have to drop the starter and replace the started drive. I would not do that without looking at the brushes> It's likely time for a full rebuild.
I agree, check the bolts and connections, but IF all is well there I'd recommend getting YOUR KNOWN ORIGINAL starter rebuilt at a quality, home town type auto electric shop-DO NOT get a Chinese POS at a parts store!!
Check all connections...from the batteries down. I had an issue similar to where I replaced the starter and the problem soon returned. Found slight loose and corroded connections at the battery. No issues since. Another time I found corroded connections on the solenoid on the passenger wheel well. Once cleaned, it started up just fine again.
After that...starter bolts ...then starter.
Where did you get your Denso? I have searched the site but haven't really found anyone local.
If I looked it up right for my E99, it should be part # 280-5315
I bought mine from Corey at CNC Fabrication. There are A LOT of imitations out there for much cheaper, but buying from Corey I was confident that I would get a good product.
You can view pics of the starter I purchased some years ago, original Denso from Japan, quality piece of equipment, in my photo albums in the starter section. I show some pics of a failed solenoid as well. Just click on my name top right corner and show all albums. Most starter/alternator rebuild places should be able to order one.
"Corey at CNC Fabrication."

Found their website just for the heck of it. Looks like the real deal and are new, not re-manufactured. As mentioned a bit pricey but I tend to be in the "get what you pay for" camp.

They are in fact genuine Denso on the CNC Fab website, I can vouch for that 100%.
