Sometimes when I start my truck the starter just spins and doesnt engage the flywheel, It usually catches after a couple tries. Is this just a sign of a starter getting weak? Should i take it apart and clean or lube it? Buy a new starter?
It usually means the bendix that throws the gear out has gotten weak. You can get a rebuild kit, or even a reman starter airly cheap. Also, check the flywheel just to be sure that there aren't any broken teeth on it. This would make it seem that the starter is bad...
My bet is bad bendix...might be ahead to replace the whole starter if possible. The bendix is a inexpensive fix and just as much labor as replacement starter.
I had this problem 2 days before my engine swap. When I got the engine out and took a look at the starter it had completly gutted its bearings. I have not had the truck long but when I took the starter out it did notice that the bolts were not tight. The new starter was only $30 so really not bad at all and it is new.
