351W heads

Hello, I took my 1987 F-250 4x4 into the shop for a few things. Come to fine out comp bad. #1,5,6,7,8 130psi. #2,3,4, dead. He said intake valve sucked into head. So I need a rebuild or replace I found a pair on ebay for $358.00. Question is will all 351w heads fit my engine. The ones I found are
Ford 351 5.7Liter Cast-Iron cyl heads(2) casting #E7 -SmallCombustionChamber

can someone plz respond. THX David

What engine do you have now ? If a 5.0, then you'll need head bolt washer/bushings to use 351W heads. The bolt holes are drilled larger for the 1/2 bolts. You can get by without them, But I wouldn't. E7's were used on all the 351's til the end in 97. The Mustangs vans and pickups used them also. Some of the T-bird motors too I think. All the big car 5.0's used the E6 heads as did the 86 Stangs.

I have also run across some pickups/vans with E6 heads. But was never certain these were done at the factory. Seems I've also run across at least one 351 with em too.

I believe some of these lo-po 5.0 Crown Vic motors with the E6 heads ended up in pickups in the late '80s but never heard of a 5.8 having them from the factory. Of course any combo is possible if the engine is worked on at some point in it's life.

The memory is a bit dim now, but I believe that the 86 (only) Moustang used E6SE heads which were combined with true flat top pistons in the HO motor of that year. The valves were located higher in the combustion chamber which is why no valve reliefs were used. An interesting head, not too popular with most enthusiasts however.

There were also E6AE heads, which I think are the ones that continued on for a few years.

You may be confusing those with the E5AE's. I don't recall ever seeing E6AE's. The E6SE's have an "S" cast in one corner next to the front passenger side corner of the valve cover. (and same at the drivers side rear corner, E7's have a "T" here ) And you're right about the valves being shorter and higher above the deck, the chambers look smaller, but they're deeper and have more volume in the chamber than the E7's All the big car 5.0's I've had, were equipped with E6SE's and cast flat tops (instead of the forged flat tops in the 86 Stang)

The E6AE head has a deep kidney bean shaped chamber that does a really good job at promoting swirl and as a result motors with this head seem to be much less detonation prone, but that deep chamber also shrowds the valves badly and the ports flow even worse than E7 heads so they make no HP.

But they make more bottomend torque. Which is why Ford kept them around on the big Ford/Merc/Lincolns till the end of the 5.0 in those cars in 91.
