I just recieve a '64 Fairlane with the original 260. I've also got a great pair of 351W 4V Heads. In upgrading the horsepower would it be possible to put these together or would a later model 5.o litre Mustang engine swap be in order. Keep in mind that I live only 15 minute a NHRA racetrack and this car will be a dual purpose street machine.
There's no difference in the heads of those used on a 4v motor and that of a 2v. While the Windsor heads will breath easier you must keep in mind they don't simply bolt on. Also, because of the larger quench area of the Windsor heads using them on a stock engine will lower your compression ratio.
These are '70 351w 4 barrel heads, better heads with bigger valves...
These good heads were only available in 1969 and 1970 correct for the 351W then all the performance efforts were shifted to the 351 Cleveland!!! Should I try finding a 351W for this project or go with a later 5.0 litre Mustang engine, I'mm flexible!
Not trying to get into a p.....g contest with you, but...
...the fallacy of there being 2V and 4V heads available on early ('69 & '70) 351W's has been around for years. A simple trip down to the bookstore for a look at a dozen or so books on Ford engines and vehicles of that era or a perusing of twice that many sites here on the internet or a just a simple look at the Ford shop manual or Ford parts books for those years will tell 'ya....There is absolutely no, No, NO difference in the valve or port sizes of the heads used on the 2V 351W and the 4V 351W.
The issue has been raised countless times over the years in every Ford and performance magazine ever printed as well as dozens of forums. And it all ends the same. I wish they'd run the proof on the front page of every newspaper in the world so that this age-'ol question could finally be laid to rest! Right along with that Comet/Failane "K" code fallacy that keeps rearing it's ugly head year to year....LOL

The old 351W heads on a 260 might not be the best match. It would require some pop ups on the pistons to raise the compression. Out of the box the 351s flow better on the intake. The 260s potentialy had better exhaust flow. The bottom ends on the 260 were not the strongest either. The 260 also had some issuse with cylinder wall thickness and over boring. A 302 or 351 would be a better choice for a block the easyiest fit would be to find one that still has a boss for the clutch linkage piviot on it.
dont know if that bombo would be very practical or not,id use a 302 with the 351 heads, but that's me,just wanted to give you a lil' info on the 62-64 fairlaines, i've had a 62 and a 63 in the past!put a 351 in my 63 and had a clearence prob. with the shock towers, didn't have the money for custom headers to fit,had to use the lil' 260 manifolds,it's really tight engine bay!
There is no such thing as 351 4V heads. The 351 head on the 69-70 were exactly the same weather it was a 2 or 4 barrel. The compression ratio was lower in the 2 barrel, not from the heads but from the pistons. The 2 barrel used dish top pistons, the 4 barrel used flat top pistons.
To add to your other thoughts. I'd definatly go with the 5.0 over the 260. A friend of mine had a 63 farlane 260, he put a stock 5.0 with a T-5 in his, what a sweet ride. He ordered the cable clucth conversion kit right for the 63 farlane everything else fell into place like it was made to fit there. Also if you are going to go to the track with it there are so many performance upgrades you can do with the 5.0. To me I would do the 5.0 for sure.
I'm getting really sweet on the idea of the 5.0 Litre engine. There are lots of them around just waiting for new homes, you know just like puppies at Christmas!!!
"Santa bring me a 5.0 from a Mustang GT" ; I'm going to write a Christmas song from this concept.
Who knows this song could become a "big hit" and I could get rich and famous then I could build the ultimate '64 Fairlane Street Machine with 600 HP, Recaro buckets, NOS system, Power Everything, remote control everything.
What color should it be: THUNDERBOLT colors Burgundy or White or something else like Red, Blue ???? I'm taking a survey...Help me out while I plan this Ultimate Blue Oval Bomber!!!
Maybe I did have a little too much EGG NOG!!! People who fool with Ford ain't playing with a full deck anyway... That's what a Chevy friend said to me once upon a time. So I fired back with some old Chevy jokes.
Southern NASCAR JOKE: Why did Chevy never make a tractor?
Answer: Their still trying to make a car...HA-HA-HA-HA
NASCAR JOKE: Why is it Chevy parts are so readly available at
auto parts houses,WALMART,
K-MART and half the drugstores in town.
