I wonder if a long bed tank would fit on the short bed frame if the DEF junk was removed? Has anyone deleted their truck and successfuly installed a long bed tank on a short bed truck?
You would need to physically examine them side by side to check the humps on the top of the tanks and the mounting "dents" on the bottom of the tank. I honestly don't think it will.

Interesting thought, I bet you could get it to fit, would be curious on how the pickup and fill would line up. I shopped a while and found Titan tank for 1100 or so. Still steep but best I found at the time.
IIRC, it has to do with strapping points. Anything is possible to do, it just depends on how much fabrication you want to do, to make it happen. And how much it's going cost to do the fabrication vs. getting a tank already made to deal with that issue.
I also seem to remember someone adding a factory 38 gal to a 26 gal truck.

Yes, that is what I was asking. Would the frame have the appropriate mounting holes and would everything line up correctly.
If I could find a factory 38 in a wrecking yard and fit it to my 26 gal frame after a delete and make it fit for less than a 50gal titan I would be interested in giving it a try.
I did what others posted above and carry jerry cans in the bed while towing just in case I get into an area that fuel stops are spread out to far to make it. I can't justify the 1k to add a larger tank to my truck only for camping trips.

My exact purpose of this thread haha. Except without the delete. I need to find someone who has the 35 or 38 and park side by side and compare!
He's talking about the DEF tank. It takes up a lot of room under the truck. Ford decided to sacrifice Fuel tank capacity to fit the DEF tank right behind it.
GM decided to put their DEF tanks under the passenger floorboard and let it hang down a foot for everyone to see. I would assume that lets them use larger fuel tanks, but it's definitely a lot uglier.
With my stock '12 F250 CCSB there was a large unused void space forward of the 26 fuel tank. My Titan 50 gallon tank uses that space plus hangs about 2" lower to create the 50 gallon volume. I would guess if a tank designer only used the void space to expand the tank volume, the result would be 35-40 gallons.
I am a long ways away from Flagstaff, but if you head up north and are close to SLC, I have one sitting in the shed.
I really appreciate that Mike! I'm in Utah pretty often during the summer, but just barely on the border at Lake Powell. Perhaps we could work something out in the future. I need to find a truck locally to compare with, and inspect the mounting straps, and bends, etc......I'm not giving up!
The first one is LWB and you can see strap placements. The photo cuts off the rear part of the tank but does show all 3 straps. The left two are in the stock location. The front strap is added to support the front of the tank. Maybe not needed with a stock 37 gallon tank in a SWB.
The other two photos will give you an idea of the top of a SWB tank vs top of a LWB tank.
Larry -- Nice info and photos. Had a Titan 50 gallon diesel fuel tank installed (4 Wheel Parts) to replace the original 26 gallon. My local Ford dealer reprogrammed the trip computer (to correctly compute distance to empty, etc) for free. Looking forward to the doubled range, especially when towing.
Mine is similar. range and display. I figure, even with a regen or two, I could eaisly go the 999 miles or more.
Larry,
I wish I got the 18 mpg it showed. I had just reset the MPG.
When I filled up I had traveled 902 miles. I had about 4 gallons left in the tank. So at dead empty I would have been at about 965 miles for this tank.
I'm glad I did it.
