I have a 2011 4x4 F350 shortbed and have the dreaded 26 gallon fuel tank. I have heard that the 35 gallon tanks, are a perfect fit for the shortbeds? Or how about the newer 38 gallon tanks on the 17's and 18's? I don't really want to spend $1000+ on an aftermarket tank, if a OEM one is compatible. Then I can just start my hunt of one at a junkyard, or find a parts vehicle.....thanks!
Also, if you know which trucks have the 35's versus the 26, that would be extremely helpful on my search for the bigger tank
The simple answer is there are NOT any stock tanks that will interchange. You only real option is aftermarket such as Titan or TransferFlow.
The Titan tank is poly which is the same as the stock tank. The SWB can go from 16 to 50 gallon. Not sure what the capacity of the TransferFlow is.
The tanks a pricey for some, but if you travel a lot, it is worth it. You can be a bit more selective on where to stop for fuel vs having to stop soon.

Well crap that is a bummer! Not what I wanted to hear haha. I don't want a toolbox tank like the Transferflows are, I guess I'll have to pony up for a Titan. I only want something that will replace the factory size. I remember seeing different sizing options with Forscan, but can't recall if it lets you adjust it to whatever size you want? I want the biggest that will fit under the truck!
I highly doubt there was some regulation mandating this. I think Ford just had other priorities instead. As each year all the OEM's try to one up the other, things get added.
My Ford dealer installed the Titan tank back in 2013 and recalibtlrated the fuel capacity and it was still covered under the factory extended warranty if any problem came up, which so far hasn't. I highly doubt a large Ford dealer would do this if it was against the EPA requirements.

He's talking about the DEF tank. It takes up a lot of room under the truck. Ford decided to sacrifice Fuel tank capacity to fit the DEF tank right behind it.
GM decided to put their DEF tanks under the passenger floorboard and let it hang down a foot for everyone to see. I would assume that lets them use larger fuel tanks, but it's definitely a lot uglier.
I'm willing to bet Ford just decided it was enough and during the redesign, luckily, they listened that it wasn't enough. If it was against some sort of regulation, the long beds would only have a 26 gal tank too. I'm not thrilled with my 38 gal. tank on my long bed, but not dis-satisfied enough to pony up for a replacement one. It's really only an issue on my vacation drives and for that I just bring jerry cans with me. It's inconvenient and you gotta stop to use them, but I can stretch out stopping a bit since I know I got 25 gal extra sitting in the bed. Since I have fuel OCD my 28 gal tank is really a 18 gal tank otherwise.

The long beds have two more feet of room underneath so there's two more feet of fuel tank. If you look underneath the truck, you'll see how the DEF tank is taking up the same space that a larger fuel tank would have taken up on an older model truck.
I haven't looked under the new trucks to see how they redesigned or re-positioned the DEF tank, but I'm sure they moved something around to make extra room for the bigger fuel tanks.
It's actually 18" since SB has a 6.75' vs. 8' bed LB- which is my point. If there was a legislation against having 38 gal or weight problems with the extra fuel then LB would only have a 26 gal tank. Of course there is a way to have a larger tank in both since two different aftermarket companies make larger replacement tanks. Granted they stick down a little, but a lot of that is due to lack of further rearward support.
And the new processing plant hardware that acme out in 2011 (DPF/SCR) won't let you put one on that side of the vehicle as well, so no twin tanks from the factory.
Another lousy option is replacing the spare tire area with a second tank, but you lose your spare.
Happy that the 17+ have larger tanks, because at one I will replace my 2015 with a 2017+. As for the older, SB with the tiny tanks, unfortunately, there are no cheap options to getting a larger tank.
I was lucky on finding my Titan tank on eBay. There was a salvage company that bought a 65 gallon tank for the LWB and offered it for $975 plus shipping from VA via truck. There was a broken fitting that I had to replace and also added the "skid plate". I had it in my shed for 6 weeks before my ordered 2015 showed up 29 June 2014.
I wonder if a long bed tank would fit on the short bed frame if the DEF junk was removed? Has anyone deleted their truck and successfuly installed a long bed tank on a short bed truck?
