2015 F350 A/C compressor problem

I was returning from work a few days ago when I heard a strange grinding sound. I pulled over and noticed smoke coming from the passenger side engine area. The truck wasn’t hot and there was no fluids leaking so I continued driving. I then noticed that my ac had stopped blowing cold air. I got home and popped the hood to visually inspect the compressor and it looked like the pulley had gotten very hot. Of course the compressor is located where it’s not easily accessible. Is this a common problem? When I bought the truck used the car fax report stated that some of the hvac system had been repaired. The truck had 18000 mile then and 68000 now. I doubt this repair will be covered by warranty. I use this truck for my work as a welder. It’s not very hot in my part of Texas at the present, but that won’t last long. I appreciate any helpful advice or suggestions.

What does it do when in your driveway with the ac on and engine running? Is the compressor turning? Do you hear the noise when the ac is not engaged? A little more info would help. Chances are the ac compressor has locked up. The best thing to do is replace it. Watch out when you remove the ac lines after recycling the freon. Make sure there is no metal shavings in the lines. I would recommend flushing the system and replacing the fixed orfice tube if it has it. You need to get the system as clean as possible to avoid damaging the new compressor.

The compressor isn’t doing anything. I don’t hear it engaging/disengaging. I will try to find someone skilled to repair the problem. Hopefully they will thoroughly clean the system like you suggest. This is something I will not attempt to remedy by myself. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

My 2011 compressor went at 70k .. due to low coolant due to the evaporator leaking which is common on these trucks.
