I have a '98 Ranger that I want to put a custom steering wheel into.
Of course that will include doing away with the airbag in my stock steering wheel, I don't mind.
Has anyone had experience doing this? Any tips/ advice I will need to know would be totally cool.
I will be switching columns anyway, as I'm going with a Manual Trans, so may as well do both in one job.
Thanks in advance.
Not sure what the laws are were you live but here in Maine, a vehicle that is equipped with an air bag must have it in working order before the vehicle will pass the annual state safety inspection.
might need a older column that a custom wheel can mount to, the newer stuff isnt like the older stuff, think the airbag wheel is a D shaped shaft where wheel goes on, older stuff used splines , im not sure how if you could take the older shaft that a custom wheel would work with and put it in a current model column , i wouldnt mind a diffrent wheel myself. i hate alot of this newer stuff, air bags, auto locking doors, ect. if i had something newer with a air bag id probly disable it anyways.
I'm no longer interested in a non-bag wheel...had an accident today in my 2012 Ford Focus, the bag and belt saved my life. So I'll keep the bag, what a twist of fate!
Not kidding, they said if not for those two together I'd not be here. The belt hurt me, but saved me. My neck hurts and my gut feels like I took 12 uppercuts from Mr. Tyson, but I'm still here.
