My 2005, F150 (FX4) has a VERY sporadic starting issue. When I say sporadic.....it hasn't happened in ten months but all of the symptoms are identical.
When I turn the key to start, the dash lights come on but there is no "click" and it won't start. If I cycle (on-off) the key back and forth 5-6 times it will then start. Does this sound like my ignition switch or another electrical gremlin? I don't think it's the starter based on what it's doing.....
If it means much, both times in the last year have been in very cold temperatures; -10 degrees Fahrenheit.
no click means power is not getting to the solenoid or solenoid is bad.... Problem is not the starter... You could have a switch problem, solenoid problem, neutral start switch problem, or any wires in between. Would not hurt to inspect some of the wire terminals on the fire wall fuses / solenoid / etc.. Other than that, its hard to "test" for a problem when the problem is intermittent.
Thanks Steve. I will have a look at the terminals. Hopefully I can report back with better symptoms. Tough when it's sporadic. To rule out the neutral safety switch....should I shift to neutral when it doesn't start next time.
that might be a good test... I was just wondering when you turn the key 5-6 times to try to start, your other hand might be resting on the shift lever - or bumped it and activated the N-start... just thinking out loud.
