I'm working on a '89 F-250 diesel(7.1) engine.Nothing happens when I turn the key. Solenoid does not click. I'm wondering if it's the park-neutral switch. Is there a way to trouble-shoot the switch? Someone suggested shorting across the solenoid. If it still won't turnover how do I know if it's the switch or the solenoid? Is there anything else that would cause this problem? The batterys are both fully charged and the dash lights work as expected when the key is turned on. Any help will be appreciated. Thanx
first take a screw driver and contact it between the small center post on your solenoid and the post that has the wire going to your starter, it usually the post towards the back of the truck. That should kick the starter on. if it does then that says your solenoid is ok. next you should bypass the park/neutral safety switch then try to start your truck. also ford trucks have wires that have fuselinks connected in line with the wires check to see if you have voltage on both side of the wires. If not then a hardware store will have the neccesary wires to replace them. goodluck. from cookie98

Actually you have to jump the small centre post to the front terminal on the starter relay, the one that has the battery positive wire on it. This puts 12 volts to the centre solenoid which closes the relay. If the starter turns the starter and solenoid are good.
Check for voltage on the wire to the small terminal of the relay with the key turned to start. No voltage means a broken wire, bad ignition switch or bad neutral safety switch.
Good Luck.
Thanks, guys. A co-worker told me to pull the safety switch and short across with a wire to by-pass the switch. Can you tell me how the switch is mounted to the transmission? I'm going to try this Saturday. Thanks again.
Sound like your starter is gone. You understand jumping the fender solenoid? If nothing happens then you probbably need a new starter. Crawl under and make sure all the connections are tight, if I remember the "mechanic" simply hit my starter with a wrench a few times, which caused some very slow movements before deciding the starter was the problem. I think jumping the solenoid should override any safety features.. it sure did on mine.
I want to thank everyone for their tips on solving my problem. We shorted across the solenoid and found the starter to be good. We then wired past the park safety switch and that worked so we are replacing that switch. Thanks again for the help.
