I have been working on my friends 87 F-150 4.9 lately, and the truck will not start with the key. It can be turned on(radio, heater, ect.) but it will not crank. To start it, you have to pop the hood and start it with a screwdriver on the solenoid. All I need to know is what two wires to connect to engage the starter. This help would be appreciated.
On my '86, it had the same problem (intermittently) when I bought it. It's a blue & red wire running from the ign switch to the "I" post on your starter solenoid. Since my problem was pretty random, I just installed a push button ign and ran my own wire through the firewall to the solenoid. Hope this helps.
If you want to try to fix the problem, then I would look at your neutral safety switch(either on the side of the auto tranny or on the clutch pedal).
There is another poster with the same problem, and it looks like he might have a problem also with his ignition switch actuating linkage.
With a voltmeter, test the blue/red wires going into the neutral safety switch. If you spring the ignition switch to start, and you have no voltage at the neutral safety switch, then there must be something wrong at the igntion switch and or the linkage.

How exactly would I set this up, torquemeister?
