I have mostly lurked this forum for solutions to problems with my truck but I cant find an answer to this problem. I have a 92 4x4 5.8 xlt supercab and it sits more than I would like these days but its become unreliable so I just keep the battery up and drive it every couple weeks. Now the problem, when I turn the key lately I have about a 30% chance that it will turn over, all the dash lights work but the starter does not engage. At first I was jumping the starter with a screw driver then I discovered the solenoid on the passenger fender could be jumped as well so thats how I have been starting it when needed. When it doesnt start with the key there is no click at all nothing and I have tried replacing the solenoid and that changed nothing. I was thinking I may need a ignition switch but thought I would check here first for ideas. Thanks in advance for your input.
I "could " be the ignition switch, but I would also check the Multifunction switch (neutral safety) on the transmission if it is an automatic transmission, or the clutch safety switch if it is a manual.
This happened to me once this past summer, it never did it again . But, I did not have any idea what could be the cause..... Once again I have learned from this forum
if it is an automatic trans, try putting it in neutral when it don't start and try. if it then starts it is a miss aligned or bad neutral safety switch.
if manual trans, try stomping hard on the clutch. it is most likely a worn clutch interrupter switch.
