just a little back ground on me .I bought a 1990 bronco that was sitting for ten years. I got it running runs good . but we got are first snow of the year and the 4x4 doesn't work. the light comes on and I hear it engaging
Sounds like the auto hubs aren’t working. You can try disassembled and relubing them. Mine quit so bought the adapter kit and put a set of mile marker manuals on it.
What do you mean by "can hear it engage"? Does the front driveshaft turn when 4x4 is engaged?
I take it you have an electric shift transfer case, ****/button on dash not shifter on floor. I would bet that you hear the solenoid but the transfer case is not engaging. If it sat for ten years the shift motor is most likely stuck.
There are three things to look at to diagnose the front wheels not engaging.
First, lock the hubs as you normally would and put the transmission/transfer case in neutral and then jack up the front end and put it on jack stands. Rotate the drive shaft.
If rotating the driveshaft does not turn the AXLE (driveshaft spins, axles don't) you have something wrong with your differential.
If rotating the driveshaft turns the axles, but the WHEELS don't turn, you have an issue with your hubs.
Now, put your transmission in gear and the transfer case in four wheel drive. You should now NOT be able to turn the axle (the transfer case should keep it from spinning). If you can, you have an issue with your transfer case.
Neither of those will diagnose why you have an issue, but will at least track it down to where it is.
