Only problem with trying to go back to the kickdown rod is finding the correct length rod to use. I have a handful of them hanging in my shop and they all different bent, different length. You can't use a 2 bbl rod on a 4 bbl intake as the throttle lever is in a different position in relation to the lever on the transmission. And none are stamped with the engineering numbers to find the one you're looking for.

One way to reduce wear is to install the return spring above the shaft, and anchor it in front of the shaft somewhere. This way, most of the fore-aft forces balance out.

It may be difficult to find a spring anchor in front and above the throttle shaft, but you can probably fabricate a small bracket.
That's basically what I had to do with the linkage on the 3x2 setup on my 331. The spring on the throttle cable linkage wasn't stiff enough to close the three carbs and all the mechanical linkage connecting them. I added another return spring to it, but it's connected to a bracket I added to the front driver's side intake bolt. But as it's attached to the crossover linkage, there's no added stress to the carb's throttle shafts.
