Has anyone tried the aftermarket tailgates (of the $200.00 variety) available on places like NPD & Bronco Graveyard?
They say they are lighter material, I just don't how much lighter they are & if they will stand up to normal use.
I need a good one for my 77 F-150 that I plan on restoring & keeping a long time.
Thank you in advance for any firsthand knowledge of these tailgates.
I don't have one personally, but a guy I know does. Last I heard, he was looking for a replacement in the junkyard because of the poor quality of the reproduction. He demonstrated to me that it bowed in the middle with moderate weight applied to it. Welds also seemed weak.
The one I have on my truck is considerably lighter gauge and the contour doesn't match the bed sides, it's my beater tailgate until I get around to painting the original.
Like Fordfanboy said aftermarket tailgates are poor quality. Also, they don't have "FORD" stamped on the tailgate, it's blank.
I would look for a good used one, especially if you eventually intend to restore the truck.
I welded up damage to my OE tailgate. Smoothed it out and put waxy rust proof inside. It has done fine. The licensed repro tailgates with the Ford logo may be better than the generic. I don't know but worth asking.
I got one from Bronco graveyard a few years ago. Has the Ford logo on it. Held up fine to a lot of abuse so far. I think it was close to 500 bucks with shipping. If insurance wasn't paying, don't know if I would have got it.
I used to have one until I found good original at the junk yard. I had to pick it up and move the other day looking for old parts. It weighs about half as much as stock.
