Does anyone have any experience with or know of any after market tailgates. Mine was stolen last week. Also, is it true that you should NOT run gateless unless your bed is braced in some way?
I know this is not the aftermarket section, but it seems to get more traffic and more knowledgeable people.
I have heard that aftermarket tailgates are crap, they last great for a few years then go crap. I would suggest looking for a used Ford one, it may be a little more expensive but it will last longer.
get a ford one, after markets are still crap. mines so whimpy i'm afraid to stand on it. its uses about half the guage metal a stock one does, and it doesn't even fit right in the opening. on the plus side, there cheap as dirt(wonder why?).
do not get an aftermarket. my last ford had an aftermarket on it. i was at a party (this was many years ago) and someone took it upon themself to use it as a seat. well, it didn't hold three people very well. needless to say, i went without a tailgate for quite some time.
but definitely get a ford one, the aftermarket ones crinkle like a beer can when you put stress on them. my brother had a 95 f250 with an aftermarket one on and we were unloading firewood off it, he stepped on the tailgate carrying a big chunk of wood and his foot caved it right in.
I posted this question in the Aftermarket section with no responses but does anyone have any experience with http://www.ford-auto-body-parts.com. I went and looked at their tailgate and it looked pretty stout. The metal seemed to be the same gauge as stock. I am taking my truck there monday to see how the part fits.
