It's not side to side, it's just making sure the thrust angle is 0 degrees. That means neither rear wheel is forward of the other. This way they are perfectly perpendicular to the driveshaft.
Frankly, today, I would pay someone to do work like that....no longer being young and broke, I only do light work on my own vehicle....and that's simply because I'm particular about how some things are done.
