i just had my 96 150 lifted 6'' and 35's put on about four months ago. I was hoping to have the lift and gears done at the same time, but i wasn't sure how much gears were to have done. Well i asked, ouch! they told me it would be 1300 bucks for front and rear, i took it as 1300 for the gears + install. Am i correct and is that a good price. thanks for any help
That sounds a little high but it's really hard to say without knowing more details. Generously priced, the gears will run $400, you can get them cheaper than that but roughly $200 a set is about tops what you should be paying in town. Then if the installer is replacing bearings and using a full overhaul kit while installing them that's another $200. So IF you get all new carrier/pinion bearings and your gears via the installer that could be $600 in parts. This is also assuming you don't need a change of carrier for the gear swap you're doing. So that leaves $700 for the install job itself. This is not a terrible price if the swap is being done in the truck. The mechanic has to disassemble the axles to get the carriers out and do the gear swap which can be time consuming, not to mention the time it will take to set up the gears properly.
So in all my babbling I guess what I'm saying is $1300 sounds a little steep but not completely unreasonable. Just get a break down of charges so you know what you're paying for first. I just regeared my front axle and I'm working on the rear right now. I'm doing these out of the truck and will tell you it can be time consuming work.
i guess i will ask a few more places what they charge. the place i asked was 4wheelparts. i was asking the man that installed the lift for me about gear change before i had the work done and he said don't even bother, which the truck still has pretty decent power, i am just nervous that i would get stuck easy with the factory gears when i go offroading. anyone here ever gone out with factory gears and got stuck, then came back later after a gear change and made it through the same hole with ease
Really, if your truck has power to turn the tires, that won't be the reason you would be stuck. Not having a Limited Slip Differential or Locker would be more the root of that. If you don't have at least an LSD in your truck, you're basically driving a 2WD truck if you get stuck. Look at getting an LSD or Locker at the same time, at least for the rear axle. If you feel you have plenty of power just do the locker / LSD and same some money.
In terms of performance the lower gears will make a much bigger difference on the road then they will offroad. If you don't feel under powered taking off from a dead stop or pulling hills then I would say don't bother. You have low-range on your t-case for offroad wheel speed. As was already mentioned a locker would be a far better way to spend the money.
