just bought my truck last night 2018.. doesn't have remote start but I read its already there and easy and cheap to get.
I have no idea what anything you said means or how it works but I am interested to learn. Can you explain it more please .

What I don't understand is......... Ford Pass is only available on F150's, Fusion and Escape....... WTF? Wife has a loaded '17 Edge and with her workplace parking would like to start the car before she heads to the parking garage. Not offered on a $40K Edge but you can get it on an Escape???? Go figure.

 

Ford SmartLink will solve your wifes remote starting problem as well as 2015-2017 F150`s.

 

Ford Pass is a free app for your smart phone.
You can start, stop, unlock, lock, see your fuel level and find your vehicle.

Your truck must have Ford connect.
It may be listed separately or I believe its part of the technology package also.

You can also get recall notices, find gas stations, probably some other stuff

Please explain? She has remote start. I start her car every morning before she leaves..... No, I do not go out and start it. I do it from inside with the fob...... What she wants to be able to do is start it via her iPhone.... (work phone).... because the fob is out of range.

 

SmartLink is a feature/hub that`ll plug into the OBD II port. Ford says it will finally be available this year and it will give 2010-2016 vehicles some if not all of the features that are available on the newer Ford vehicles that have Ford Connect and it`ll also come with it`s own companion App which will be an updated version of the current Ford Pass App.

The newer Ford vehicles equipped with Ford Connect have a built in modem which enables owners to start their vehicle via their cell phone plus many other things. SmartLink will give 2010-2016 Ford vehicles owners the same capabilities as the 2017-2018 Ford Connect equipped vehicles and I find it hard to believe that Ford will not update this info to include vehicles such as your wifes 2017 Edge Titanium

SmartLink will require a Data plan from the participating cell provider or providers that Ford will partner with but there`s no info yet if Ford will offer a trial version like they offer on some newer vehicles equipped with Ford Connect and yes, even the newer vehicle owners will have to purchase the Data plan after the trial version ends if they want to continue to use the service.
