Replacing rear heater core

I have a 2000 Excursion that I just changed the front heater core on because it was plugged. I have the same issue with the rear so I’m going to be changing it. I’ve removed all the panel pieces to access the rear heater box. I’m looking for guidance on the proper way to gain access to the core inside the box. Thanks in advance for any help!

I truly appreciate it! There’s no hurry so just whenever. The heater core along with a new starter aren’t arriving until probably Thursday or Friday. I’m just trying to get everything prepped so when they arrive I can install them as quick as possible. The temps where I’m at are running between-10 and -25 with windchill factor in and I’m having to work on it outdoors. I’ve been working in short burst lol. Have the starter relay changed and old starter out already. Now I just have to gain access to the rear heater core so I can just swap it out when the new one arrives. Thanks again!

From the manual. This covers '00 and '01 for sure, and should be the same for 02-05. It is really pretty simple. There is a cover with 3 little bolts. You pull the core out, clamp off the lines to keep fluid from running everywhere, and then disconnect and replace. You won't be removing the whole thing. Just the 3 screws listed later in the removal process there.

Thank You Very Much! I’ve already been able to get it pulled and ready to be swapped out when the new one arrives thanks to your help! The game plan I had by just looking at it was going to take a lot more time and work! It also very well may have lead to me breaking things and having to buy more parts lol! I truly appreciate it!

So there must be multiple designs for this. Just replaced the rear core in my 2k XLT because it was leaking coolant out the drain tube and onto the exhaust pipe. Needless to say, wasn’t just 3 screws to get it out for me. After getting the rear right panel off (and lots of cursing) I had to take the whole lower pan off the ducting. About 8 screws (some you have to feel for on the outer side) and the core dropped out. Once that lower pan was off, it was simple to swap out and put it all back together, but I couldn’t find anywhere that described what mine looked like. Figured I’d share in case anyone else has this same setup.
