I have a 94 Explorer with a 4.0... The check engine light started to intermittently come on earlier this week and now it stays on all the time. The idle is rough and there is black smoke coming from the exhaust. Does anyone have any idea on what might be going on before I take it in to see what codes I'm getting out of it.
Thanks,
Danny
I'd check the vacuum line fron the fuel pressure regulator for the presence of gas first. If the regulator leaks, it will dump gas right into the intake manifold causing a rich condition. The only other thing would be a leaking injector.
If you feel like it, pull the codes yourself before you take it in to someone. On a '94, all you need is a short piece of wire (paper clip?). The codes come up as flashes of the CEL. Detailed instructions for pulling codes can be found at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html or in any good repair manual.
Yes, MAF signal voltage too low; classic sign of dirty MAF wires. You might try cleaning it before replacement. If you do a search, there's plenty of descriptions on cleaning procedures.
You can also unplug the MAF connector, spray it with WD-40, and re-plug. Ford had a lot of trouble with those connector plugs.
