Check Engine Light '94 Explorer

At what mileage does the "Check Engine" light come on automatically? I've heard that they are programmed to come on at a certain mileage just so we take them to a dealer to have them put on the scope to make sure that everything is within proper limits. Mine came on momentarily today and then went off. The vehicle has about 91,000 miles and is running OK except for an occassional ping when pulling a long grade. Thanks for the help.

I don't know that Ford does that on the Explorer. Some other manufacturers do that, though. Take it to your local Autozone and they can pull any codes that might be in the computer. (And it's free!)

Adding to the previous poster: or you can check the codes yourself using a jumper wire (male spade lugs on each end) and the check engine light. There are lots of sites on the web with instructions and code charts. Do a search on Ford EEC-IV Codes, or check a Haynes or Chiltons manual.
